ZERO WASTE WITH A BABY
With a baby in the house, the amount of waste increases, and that can be frustrating! At Pyrex®, we're committed to helping you reduce food waste. Here are our three tips for going Zero-Gasp with your baby.
PREPARE AND FREEZE TO DIVERSIFY
Preparing meals for babies every day can be quite a challenge! But you still want to serve your child as many home-cooked dishes as possible? Batch cooking and freezing are your best allies. Allocate a time slot each week to prepare soups, purées and compotes with seasonal vegetables and fruit, and take advantage of this to cook large quantities. Then pour your preparations into small, easy-to-stack containers and store part of them in the freezer and part in the fridge. This will enable you to diversify your weekly menus with freshly-prepared jars stored in the fridge, and thawed homemade jars. We recommend cans between 0.2L and 0.35L for easy freezing and defrosting.
SHARE YOUR LEFTOVERS
You've finished the family dinner and, like every night, you've got some vegetables left over. You can store these vegetables, blend them and serve them to your baby the next day. This will help to diversify your toddler's diet, and may even make him want to finish the green beans when he grows up! To put this tip into practice, get into the habit of seasoning your dishes less during preparation, so that they remain healthy for your baby, and everyone can season their plate as they wish. This could even contribute to everyone in the family eating less salt, for example.
DON'T THROW AWAY THEIR LEFTOVERS
Your baby really likes the food you've prepared for him, but he can't seem to finish his purée or compote. Forcing him to finish could paint your kitchen or make it difficult for him to digest. There's no point in forcing him to finish his plate to avoid waste - you can reduce your food waste in other ways! What's left on the plate or in the jar is bound to be good for at least 24 hours, so save it for the next meal! To make organization easier and reduce the amount of washing-up, we recommend using lidded pots or bowls. You cook, pour into the pot, heat, serve, then put the lid back on when it doesn't want it anymore, and it's back in the fridge! Pyrex 's ® mini preserving tins are ideal for this purpose, with their adapted capacity and healthy BPA-free material. They're easy to reseal and transport to your nanny's house, for example! In short, prepare large quantities, preserve small quantities, serve without forcing, and don't throw away leftovers! To preserve the quality of your leftovers, consult our storage tips for each type of food. These recommendations for avoiding food waste with your baby will be good for the planet and your wallet.
